XS4ALL also going to offer fiberglass services

While I am waiting to be connected to the fiberglass network, I asked AlmeerNet about other providers next to KPN. I am currently with XS4ALL and for various reasons would prefer to stay with them. AlmeerNet confirmed that XS4ALL will also be on the fiberglass network in the fall but they couldn’t give a date or details. I am curious if XS4ALL is going to offer different services and better prices than KPN.

Firefox Download Day

I almost missed it, but today is the official download day for the next major release of Firefox. Of course you could download it any other day but the goal of the special download day is to set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours.

Download Day 2008

Firefox has been great since the first releases (even before it was called Firefox) and the new version 3 is even better. I’ve been using the version 3 beta releases on and off and am looking forward to get the final version.

Fiber-to-the-home network in Almere

October last year, it was announced that our city would be the first fiberglass city in the Netherlands within the next 2 1/2 years. Announcements like this have often been made, also for other cities like Amsterdam and Deventer, so I was skeptical. But it is actually happening. First houses in Almere Haven have been connected and according to the site of AlmeerNet it is our turn in February 2009.

There is no information yet available about speed, services and prices. Currently I have an ASDL connection with 20 Mbit/s downstream and 1Mbit/s upstream for EUR 54,95 per month including VOIP. With a higher upstream speed I could host some sites and services at home and it should also make it more pleasant to work at home.

Classical Music Goes Digital, DRM-Free with Deutsche Grammophon

Digital music distribution is unstoppable. More and more labels decide to take the business into their own hands. This week, Deutsche Grammophon, the classical music recording giant that’s owned by Universal Music Group, launched its own DRM-free online music store.

Amazing demo of Photosynth

At this years TED Talks Blaise Aguera y Arcas who is an architect at Microsoft Live Labs gave an amazing demo of Photosynth.

It won’t work on a Mac but at least it shows some interesting new developments (finally the powerful 3d card is good for something).

Corporate Connection v.2 now on Flickr

Have a look the corporate world:

Corporate Connection v.2, 2003

Corporate Connection is the work of Zohar Manor-Abel a self declared typography geek, film maker wannabe, internet obsessed, photography enthusiast, non stop reader, hopeless musician, anti-corporate freak, free culture fighter.

Corporate Connection started in my first year of studies, as a small project to find out which brands were doing animal testings. Slowly it developed into the intricate nature of corporations, brands, consumerisms and the connections between them in about six months of research .

Parking a Sports Activity Vehicle

Have you ever wondered, why city people drive a car, which looks like it has been designed to cross the Scottish highlands or the Siberian tundra? Well, since in Amsterdam they build office buildings without enough car parkings for those people who might actually work in those buildings or visit companies in these buildings, a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle can be very handy when I comes to alternative parking.

An interview with Peter of the famous BitTorrent tracker site

Last week the Chaosradio International podcast has published an interview with Peter, who is one of the three administrators of The Pirate Bay system which has become the biggest BitTorrent tracker system in the world effectively generating half of Swedens Internet traffic. The system was recently raided by Swedish police after the US government complained about the site to the swedish government.

German BMW site banned from Google

Philipp Lenssen reports on his Google Blogoscoped blog, which is covering Google, the search engine world, online research, and other related topics, that obviously BMW.de has been removed from the Google index.

From what it looks like, the German websites of car maker BMW have been kicked out of the Google index. BMW.de at this time has a PageRank of 0. A search for BMW Germany, which only days ago yielded BMW.de as a top result, now doesn’t show any sign of BMW.de at all. Instead, BMW.com – BMW’s international site – is on top for this search.

The reason for the ban is likely to be that the BMW websites have been caught employing a technique used by black-hat search engine optimizers: doorway pages. German and international bloggers last week were quick to spread the news.
