Flickr soon to be part of Microsoft?

Yesterday it was announced that Microsoft makes $45 Billion bid to buy Yahoo! Flickr, the popular photo sharing service started in 2004 in Canada and was acquired in March 2006 by Yahoo! Inc. The Yahoo! merger already brought some changes like the required use of Yahoo! IDs and censorship issues. Merging Yahoo! services like Flickr, del.icio.us and Yahoo! Groups with existing Microsoft services will certainly bring more radical changes. The Flickr community is already reacting and if Yahoo! accepts the bid, we will probably see much more resistance.

World Wide Panorama Community theme online

Four times a year panorama photographers, professionals as well as amateurs gather to take panorama images, usually about a certain theme. This summer the theme was ‘community’ and while we were traveling Denmark I came across a good panorama location for this theme.

Amazing demo of Photosynth

At this years TED Talks Blaise Aguera y Arcas who is an architect at Microsoft Live Labs gave an amazing demo of Photosynth.

It won’t work on a Mac but at least it shows some interesting new developments (finally the powerful 3d card is good for something).

Liberation Day in Almere

Today, liberation day (Dutch: Bevrijdingsdag) is being celebrated as each year on May 5 in the Netherlands to mark the end of the German occupation during the Second World War. Each Dutch province has a huge festival and the one for our province – Flevoland – is happening here in Almere. For the first time since we live here, I went out, visited the festival and took some photos which you can see on Flickr. At 3 different stages in town, bands and DJs were playing. There were approximately 15.000 visitors.

Save the Pavilions in Almere

The pavilions in Almere are a museum and educational center for modern contemporary art. After more than 10 years, their existence is now in danger since the city wants to cut back funding and tear down the buildings. For our town of 160.000 inhabitants this would be a great loss. Just like the modern architecture, modern art is something that should have its place in our city.

Museum De Paviljoens

This weekend Museum De Paviljoens had an action weekend to raise awareness and gain support. We went there twice and took some photos, which you can see on Flickr. The current exhibition with work of Barbara Visser is excellent. Her art is mind boggling and inspirational. If you live in the area or visit the Netherlands, come and see it. It is only 30 minutes from Amsterdam and the exhibition is open until the 15th of April 2007.

After this weekend I would not only plead to save this museum but instead suggest that it gets a chance to grow larger.

Almere architecture – part III

Today we went for a nice walk through the woods close to the Kemphaan in Almere, where I took some new photos of the Eksternest nature eduction centre.

Wet Wet Wet

It is wet in Holland. After weeks of extreme drought, it is now raining a lot and the sewage system often can’t handle it. Took some snapshots with my N70:

Signs of Heerenveen

We visited Heerenveen this weekend and apart from the Oranjewoud area, the most remarkable were 3 street signs:

A Latin Breeze in Amsterdam

On Sunday I went to Amsterdam to take pictures at the Summer Breeze Latin Festival 2006 in Amsterdam, a yearly festival at the Openluchttheater in the Vondelpark.

Summer Breeze Latin Festival 2006

This was the first time I used the Nikon D200 at an event like this. The Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm lens turned out to be great for this occasion, allowing both detailed close-up shots as well as wide-angle scenes of the crowd and stage. In total I shot more than 550 images and for the first time ran out of battery close to the end because I used the internal flash as fill-in very often. Next time I will use my external Metz flash and I also bought a 2nd Nikon battery today.

World Wide Panorama Gardens online

In the period of June 20th through 25th, hundreds of VR photographers joined the World Wide Panorama effort shooting panoramas of their interpretation of the theme ‘gardens’. In all, over 300 photographers submitted their work for the project.
